    1. My favorite digital tool/online communications service would still have to be Google. I use other tools, but not nearly as much. And I use Google not only to find Web sites but to get directions, find images and find emails (via Google Desktop).

    2) What would you do with technology, communications and digital media services to make the world a better place for more people?
Well, I’ve already started working to achieve that goal! I developed a concept for a “civic networking tool” that is all about increasing civic engagement and creative collaboration for social change. I lead an community-based effort to connect people, organizations and businesses that want to improve quality of life in Miami-Dade, FL, and I believe that technology has a tremendous role in helping us achieve our mission.
    3) What do you hope to get out of attending We Media 08?
I hope to meet and learn from other social entrepreneurs, and to share what I have learned as well. I hope to find new partners, funders and allies, and to be inspired by meeting others who believe in the role of technology to support social entrepreneurship and civic and social change.

I have seven years experience in journalism, working with both local and international organisations like Panos Southern Africa and London and EU on contract basis in article writing and other Media related issues.

    A 500-WORD STATEMENT

Mobile phone, and Internet and E-mail are my favorite digital tool and online communications respectively. As indicated above that I am a freelance journalist and cellular phone helps me to accomplish my professional objectives of properly and effectively informing, educating and entertaining the public. I am able to communicate with my sources anytime. The gadget has strengthened my relationship with both rural and and urban areas because they reach me anytime they have information to share with the gerneral public.

Similarly, Internet and E-mail help me work efficiently. I use Internet as a source of information for articles. I use E-mail to send questionnaires to my sources and receive information for stories. As a freelancer it becomes expensive to rely on telephone and transport for gathering information while E-mail is cheaper and accurate.

There is overwhelming evidence that nations that are technologically advanced are more developed than those that lag behind. Most developing countries are still poor because their people do not utilise technology, communications and digital media services probably because of lack of knowledge in addition to cost of services. As a journalist and an intellect, I would write extensively to help communities appreciate the role of technology communications and digital services in the development of a nation, by using Internet to search information on how advanced countries managed to attain development so that the least developed nations should learn from them on how they can use ICT to enhance economic growth.

These articles will advocate for deliberate policies in poor countries like Malawi where I come from, to promote utilization of ICT especially in rural areas where according to 2006 UNDP index report, 65 percent of the country’s estimated 12 million people live below poverty line of US$1 per capta. The country’s economy is heavily dependent on agriculture and most of the farmers come from the rural places who could improve their living standards if they utilise ICT by finding market for their produce through Internet and email. It is therefore, my wish that I achieve a well informed world by utilisation of new technological services through publications.

Funds permit, I intend to establish a newspaper firm after graduating in 2008 which will include, newspaper; Online publication, website and an Online debate on topical issues to make the world a better place for more people. The publications among others, will extensively cover issues that impact on the marginalised group (rural, women, children, orphans, HIV/AIDS people). The firm will be fully equipped with technology, communications and digital gadgets.

I hope to acquire new knowledge and skills in technology, communications and digital services from ”We Media 08” that will help me understand ICT and ably share with the society about its significance in the development of a nation.

Finally, I expect to get exposed to new technology, communications and digital services that I will utilise to achieve my dream of achieving a well informed world through the publications that I intend to establish.

NOTE: I am able to acquire proper travel documents to enter the United States should you consider me the fellowship.

    Thank you in advance

My favorite digital tools are Yahoo groups. They are the main venue for my online laboratory, Minciu Sodas, http://www.ms.lt for serving and organizing independent thinkers around the world. I have organized a system of about 30 online groups with about 150 writers and 1,500 readers. I find these email lists are excellent for holding together people who as independent thinkers are at different levels of awareness: some are casual lurkers, about 10% write occasionally, and 1% write almost every day. Beginners may think the dialogue is “self-organized” but the leaders are actually guiding the dialogue. Our lab’s activity is so broad it is hard to explain, but during the year a person will receive hundreds of letters and at some point may get sparked to write. And then we respond, but especially for our participants with marginal Internet access. We have dozens of Africans who walk for miles and pay $1 an hour at an Internet cafe to participate. And we have provided them with paid work, computers, video cameras, air travel. Our system works well because each “working group” has a clear leader who has a deepest value in life (such as “holistic helping”, “living by truth”, “global villages”, “learning from each other”) which the group is organized to support.

We are working to develop an Includer, http://www.includer.org, a device that would let participants with marginal Internet access read and write text files (such as emails) which they store on a USB flash drive. This would allow our Africans to spend ten or twenty hours per week reading and writing letters, wiki pages, assignments which they could then upload at the Internet cafe. The Includer would include a 5″ monochrome monitor (used by some cash register displays!), a processor, and have at least two USB flash drives to allow for offline file sharing. It would use standard flash drives, computer keyboards and rechargeable batteries. It can be built to use only 2 watts which is important for the 90% of Africans without electricity. We will add modules for Bluetooth links with phones or for local wireless networks. The Includer might cost $30 if they were mass produced, but we can assemble them in Africa from kit parts for $400. That is the price of a used laptop, but the Includer is much more valuable because it is designed for Africa. Writing daily is comparable to attending college and I estimate that our daily writers are worth at least $10,000 each to our network. The Includer would allow us to include a much wider group of people.

I want to understand who might our global teams might work for and why they might like to include those with marginal Internet access. What might we do for the Peace Corps, BBC, WorldSpace, RedCross… ? I would like to understand our “cultural DNA” and we might draw “good memes” from the many cultures of the world. Alcoholism, suicide, divorce, malaria, I believe, are social problems.

I hope to sign up many “independent thinkers” for our groups!
