Carolyn Washburn
Vice President and Editor, The Des Moines Register
Carolyn joined The Des Moines Register as vice president and editor in September 2005.
Carolyn grew up in the Midwest, in a rural area west of Cincinnati. She attended Indiana University and started her career as a business reporter and business editor. She covered Oldsmobile in Lansing, Michigan and Eastman Kodak Co. in Rochester, N.Y. She was an assistant managing editor and managing editor at the Democrat and Chronicle in Rochester, New York, and managing editor and executive editor of The Idaho Statesman in Boise, Idaho.
She was president of the City Club of Boise, a non-partisan group that organized monthly forums aimed at civil dialogue on critical community issues. She is a member of the American Society of Newspaper Editors. She was chairperson of the Reporting and Editing Committee of the Associated Press Managing Editors organization, and has served on several task forces for the Gannett Co., which owns The Register. In 2007 and 2002, the company awarded her a President’s Ring, recognizing her as one of the top 10 editors in the company. She led one of the test sites for Gannett’s new Information Center approach.
Carolyn is married and has three children, a son and two daughters.
