Speaker Bio: Sam Grogg

Sam Grogg
Dean, School of Communication, University of Miami

 

Sam L Grogg was named dean of the School of Communication at the University of Miami in 2005. He holds the Ph.D. degree with a specialization in popular culture and film from Bowling Green University. In 1972 Grogg co-founded The Journal of Popular Film and Television now in its 33rd year of continuous publication. He served as the American Film Institute’s (AFI) executive director of national education during the 1970s and left in 1980 to head the USA Film Festival in Dallas, Texas. Grogg’s financing and producing credits include Kiss Of The Spider Woman and The Trip To Bountiful. In 1993, Grogg was named the founding dean of the School of Filmmaking at the North Carolina School of the Arts. While dean at NCSA, Grogg continued to produce, focusing on television movies. In 1999 Grogg rejoined AFI as dean of the AFI Conservatory.
